FAQ

What is the Bexar County Rx Card?

The program is a discount drug card service that is accepted at 62,000 pharmacies nationwide. This free service provides discounts off the retail price of prescription drugs – both brand and generic – to those who do not have insurance for their doctor-prescribed medication.

Examples include, people that have no insurance, those with insurance that doesn’t cover their drugs, and those who pay full retail price during insurance deductible or coverage “donut holes”, such as in Medicare Part D or in many consumer directed help plans.

BetterRxCard averages about 55% off generic drug prices and 15% off brands.  The average savings per prescription is about $25-$30/mo. About 80% of the claims registered with discount drug cards are for generic drugs.

Can I use the Bexar County Rx Card if I already have insurance?

Use your insurance if you have it for your prescription drug. Many times people with insurance are prescribed medication from their doctor that is not covered by their insurance. Under that circumstance  you can use the Card. If you have insurance but pay a very high copay to get your medication you should try EquivaMeds, which is offered a unique feature of the Card.

I use Medicare Part D. Can I use the Bexar County Rx Card?

Medicare Part D is an insurance program sponsored and supported by the US government for citizens over the age of 65.  It provides discounted drugs through a plan that you sign up through an insurance carrier you choose.

There are two times of the year that you can use the card even if you have Medicare Part D. The first is during your deductible phase (if you have one) when you pay 100% of the drug costs until you reach your deductible.

The second time is when you are in the donut hole.

What’s the donut hole? Medicare Part D covers your costs until you reach the donut hole (sometimes spelled doughnut hole).  This is an area where the participant (you) covers 100% of your prescription drug cost. Recently the donut hole dollar amounts where no Medicare coverage existed was between $2,700 - $6,154 of your drug expense.

If you find yourself in the Medicare Part D donut hole the BetterRxCard can help you save on your prescription drug costs.

Which prescription drugs are included in the Bexar County Rx program?

You should see savings when you use your BetterRxCard on FDA-approved drugs.  However, there are some instances that no discount is available. These instances typically include already very low priced drugs, such as the $4 you may have heard about, and in other cases when the pharmacies everyday low price is actually lower than the card’s.

The card typically finds a discount about 80% of the time and the average savings per prescription is around $30.

How does Bexar County Rx help me with an expensive copay of my brand name medication?

Discount drug cards cannot be used with insurance. For example, if you are taking Nexium for acid reflux or Lipitor to manage your high cholesterol and you have prescription drug insurance, you may pay $50, $60 or even $70 in copay costs for these medications. The card cannot be used to reduce this cost.

However, in these, and many other cases, there are options, even if there is not a generic drug available.  For these instances you could to do the following;

  1. Research for other options in other drug classes that could help you
  2. Research the pricing for each of these other drug options
  3. Print out your research and bring it to your doctor for your next appointment.

Or you can use EquivaMeds a fast, efficient way to work through this process and lower your prescription drug costs. Best of all, it’s free with the card program.
